Browser market share numbers are always interesting because they can be interpreted in a variety of ways. We’ve said for some time now that the thing we care about most is that the web experiences we all enjoy are getting better every day through a modern browser like Internet Explorer 9. The growth of IE9 on Windows 7 has been exciting to watch since our launch in March.

Last month, we mentioned that IE9 was on a path to be the number one modern browser on Windows 7 worldwide.  According to Net Applications, IE9 usage share on Windows 7 worldwide is now higher than all versions of Chrome and all versions of Firefox – second only to IE8.  That’s great news for consumers and developers alike who can benefit from the richer web experiences and standards support in IE9!

In the US, the numbers are even more exciting - where IE9 growth continues and will soon be the number one browser on Windows 7.

I wanted to address an issue related to the SkyDrive release yesterday. For any of you who are using a Windows Phone, you may have noticed that if you had previously used the Office hub to view any of your OneNote notebooks or Office documents, you may have received a message that the items were deleted from the server, or could not be downloaded.

Your items have NOT been deleted from the server.

What happened is that the URLs for the documents have changed, and this has confused the Office hub into thinking they were removed.

We really apologize for this message and any confusion this may have caused.

We’ve posted a workaround on windowslivehelp.com that is required for you to get things working again.

Issue: We’re aware that some people are experiencing issues with opening SkyDrive files and notebooks from the Office hub on the Windows Phone, such as:

When opening a SkyDrive document from the documents pivot, or a document pinned to the start screen, an error message appears saying that the file could not be downloaded.

When opening a OneNote section, an error message appears saying that the section has been deleted from the server.

Workaround: To fix this issue, you will need to reset Office. In the event that you experience one or both of the above errors, be assured that your files have not been deleted, and no sections from the notebook were actually deleted, even though they may fail to sync temporarily.

Follow these steps to reset Office on your phone:

Important note: When you reset Office, it will delete your local phone documents. It will also remove any pinned items from your home screen, so you’ll need to pin them again afterwards.

  1. Go to the Office hub on your phone, and if you don’t have copies elsewhere, email any existing documents on your phone to yourself, so that you have a copy.
  2. Go to Settings.
  3. Go to the Applications pivot.
  4. Select Office.
  5. Tap the Reset Office button. (If you get a message that Office could not be reset, reboot your phone and try again).

Once Office is reset, your files and notebooks should open properly from SkyDrive.

Hi everyone. Today we’ve started delivering Windows Phone 7.5 to Dell Venue Pro handsets on AT&T.  If you (or friends or family members) haven’t installed the update yet, now’s the perfect time. You’ll find step-by-step instructions at Update Central.

As I’ve mentioned in previous posts, we’re also continuing to deliver occasional firmware updates to specific Windows Phone models and carriers around the world. Firmware updates are designed to improve your phone’s performance. If one is available for your phone, you’ll see an update notification pop up.

Finally, I’ve noticed several people posting very specific troubleshooting questions here on the blog, so I also wanted to put in another plug for Microsoft Answers, our handy support forum. If you have a specific question about your Windows Phone, I encourage you to check Answers first and post your question there.
